Dying Light: The Beast will have a linear story with a canon ending and no alternative endings in sight. This will be done to ensure the canon of future entries.
In an interview with GamesRadar, franchise director Tymon Smektaลa explained that it doesn’t want players to wonder what’s canon and what’s not. Simply put, you can’t give alternate endings while also keeping things straight. This is why even RPGs with a ton of choices often have a more direct canon that can be seen if the title has sequels that take place within the same timeline.
“I think [linear storytelling] also allows us to be kind of a little bit more hands on and canonical in how we steer the future of the series. When you give players choice, actually, to be fair, you shouldn’t be saying what’s canon and what’s not.
You shouldn’t be forcing your canon on the players if you give them choice […] if you say to players, ‘hey, like, this is a game with choices’, you have to live by the fact that for each one of those players, the canon will be different.”
Some are a touch worried about the game’s value, with its main story only lasting around 20 hours, which many believe $60 simply is too high. Now, to be clear, the game’s length isn’t everything, if it’s a high-quality experience you’ll know whether that price tag is worth the investment.
Dying Light: The Beast releases to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 19. Meanwhile, a PS4 and Xbox One release will follow.
