Dead Space director Glen Schofield has come forward to say Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol might be his final game. This comes as he also noted that he’s walked away from a new game after its studio higher-ups wanted him to streamline the budget to $2-$5 million.
On LinkedIn, Schofield explained he and his daughter, Nicole, were working on a new idea, one that was a “new sub-genre of horror.” He had acquired a full team in the UK and six people in the US. The harsh budget led him to decide to leave, as “some ideas are better left untouched than done cheap.”
He says he’s back to his art, continuing to work on things and cheer on the industry, but isn’t sure he will ever return to the industry as a game director. Though, he does give a bit of hope at the very end, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
“So Iโm back to my art. I miss it all; the team, the chaos, the joy of building something for fans. Iโm still around, making art, writing stories and ideas and still cheering the industry on. But maybe Iโve directed my last game. Who knows? If so thank you playing my games.”
