A whopping 75% of Cyberpunk 2077’s Switch 2 sales were physical, with it being among the few third-party developers that fit its entire game on one cartridge. This has sparked hope that other developers will follow behind and offer proper physical editions as opposed to Game-Key Card retail releases.
Joint CEO, Michaล Novakovski, shared during a fiscal result (via IGN) that the improvements afforded by the Switch 2 and its growing userbase led to a majority of sales on physical.
“We believe that thanks to its high quality and Switch 2 exclusive enhancements, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is well positioned to benefit from the [Switch 2’s] growing user base. As of June, the vast majority of sales โ which is around 70% โ came from physical copies sold and that reflects the strength of our offering.”
Additionally, he points to the fact the game, including its Phantom Liberty DLC, is contained on a cartridge rather than a Game-Key Card, like many have been lately, as part of its success, as well.
It’s no secret that people aren’t fans of the Game-Key Card system, as it just ends up feeling like a glorified digital copy endorsed by Nintendo, as it still requires the game to be downloaded onto your system. To be clear, this sort of thing was on the original Switch, but it was more of a backdoor thing hardly used by developers rather than something Nintendo itself has touted as an improvement to its system.
