May is around the corner and players can already start looking forward to what the new month brings. To some, May is a slow month in terms of releases especially as no PlayStation exclusives are coming out. Nonetheless, we still think there are several titles worth your attention.
Animal Well
We start the list with this promising independent title developed by Billy Basso, who previously worked at NetherRealm Studios of Mortal Kombat fame. After seven years of passionate development, Animal Well is ready to grace the PS5. Animal Well is described as a 2D Metroidvania platformer with elements of survival horror where you assume the role of a cute little blob and explore a dense and interconnected labyrinth, unraveling its many secrets. You collect items to change your environment, light up candles for safety and to gradually reveal the map, and encounter beautiful and unsettling creatures along the way. Animal Well promises to be a nonlinear atmospheric puzzler worth your time.
Animal Well releases May 9, priced at $24.99.
Braid Anniversary Edition
Originally released in 2008 for the Xbox 360, Braid continues to be a platformer hit to this day. Braid is a puzzle-platformer with a unique time manipulation mechanic where players can rewind and slow down time or create parallel realities. Players must use these time powers to solve puzzles and rescue an abducted princess.
Braid Anniversary Edition promises to be a trip down memory lane, although one with graphical improvements, updated sounds and character animations, and a very in-depth developer commentary to accompany your journey. If you miss old Braid, you can toggle between the original and the Anniversary Edition at any time, which not only changes the level of graphical detail, but the sound effects and music. Braid veterans and newcomers alike will no doubt be happy to see this classic platformer be given a new life on the PS5.
Braid Anniversary Edition launches May 14, price yet to be revealed.
System Shock Remastered
One of the best shooters of all-time graces the PS5 with this updated Unity-engine upscale. Players will be trapped aboard Citadel Station, battling cyborgs and mutated enemies corrupted by the rogue AI known as SHODAN, one of gaming’s most treacherous antagonists and proverbial mother of Portal’s GLaDOS.
System Shock Remastered was previously released in 2023 for PC to great critical acclaim, and represented a faithful recreation of the beloved classic. It is now time for current gen consoles to experience System Shock through this remastered port and introduce new generations to the scheming SHODAN. Don’t let this one escape you!
System Shock Remastered releases May 21, priced at $39.99.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
Originally released in 2016, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is making its way to the PS5. The story takes place two years after the events of the first game, with the protagonist joining the Time Patrol, as history is changing once again with the appearance of Cooler, Turles, Broly, and Janemba.
Xenoverse 2 originally launched to fair critical reception, although fans agreed that the sequel is accessible to newcomers to the series. The game on current gen consoles is sure to please Dragon Ball fans as publisher Bandai Namco revealed upgraded versions of the game with improved graphics and load times. Bandai Namco also revealed new paid DLC plans and content to support this current gen post-launch, although specific details have yet to be announced. Fans can look forward to more Super Saiyan action coming their way.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 launches May 24, priced at $19.99.
Capes
Capes combines the X-COM turn-based genre with superhero action in what looks to be a reinterpretation of the role of superheroes in society. Assemble a formidable team of heroes and embark on a relentless mission to reclaim the city from the supervillains. Featuring both campaign and patrol missions, players will have the option of forging ahead with the main story or take their time to tackle side missions. These side missions enable players to unlock new heroes, skill points, other challenges, and reveal the backstories of the famed heroes.
Capes is developed by the Australian studio Spitfire Interactive and features talent behind the cult classic superhero game Freedom Force. We look forward to seeing how the studio adds to this legacy and how their own interpretation of superheroes keeps players invested in this genre.
Capes releases May 29, priced at $39.99.
