Avowed, the highly anticipated new title from Obsidian, seems to getting the most positive attention that it has received in a long while. Coming off a preview in which some in the media was able to go hands-on with the game, Obsidian’s upcoming title is showing off in a very positive light.
It’s been a bit of a bumpy road for Avowed. Obsidian showed off the first announcement trailer back in 2020 and fans were pumped. Fast forward to last year, at the Xbox Games Showcase in the summer, to a trailer that Obsidian had ready for Avowed. People were not nearly as excited after seeing it. Many described it as too colorful, and it was clear the vibes of the two trailers were not taking the game in the same direction.
Then in January of this year, at the Xbox Developer Direct, Avowed showed up in another, longer deep dive type of video. Fans and media alike, still were not convinced. The video had better reception, but still didn’t quite show up in the way everyone expects from Obsidian. Now, at Gamescom, Obsidian and Avowed clearly have shown the strengths of the game now that some in the media have gone hands on with it.
IGN’s Destin Legarie described his time with the game as “fantastic” in his article about his preview. He also talks about some of the choices he was able to make and in talking with developers, apparently there is a quite a bit of choice and consequence that the game will present to players.
Xbox made the announcement to push back Avowed’s release to early 2025 recently. It has been said that the delay is not due to the game not being ready. Many have speculated the delay was due to Xbox’s packed end of 2024 release schedule for its games. When thinking about it, it makes sense to try to spread out first party releases based on the Xbox Game Pass model that Microsoft has been pushing.
