Publisher Beyond Frames doesn’t mind its 2023 extraction shooter — Ghosts of Tabor — getting compared to Escape from Tarkov, in fact, it finds the comparisons “flattering.” Of course, we do see why it can be flattering, as Battlestate Games’ extraction shooter popularized the genre.
Speaking to Insider Gaming, when asked how it felt about Combat Waffle Studios’ VR-enabled extraction shooter being labeled “Tarkov VR,” it was rather warmly received, stating it was flattering to be compared to a game as prestigious as Tarkov, as it’s a leader in the genre. It also notes, though, where Ghosts Tabor dives deeper into realism with VR capabilities, the other shooter fails, alongside miscellaneous tasks, like reloading and operations.
Beyond Frames even called for Battlestate to make its own VR extraction shooter with the Tarkov branding. It’s a breath of fresh air for developers not being fussed about getting compared to surface-level comparisons with similar genres. You may remember, in an exaggerated way, Square Enix pleaded with people to stop comparing Foamstars to Splatoon, as despite its similarities, the two games were vastly different. This might not fully be the case here, as both are extraction shooters with realism at the forefront, but regardless, it’s nice to see the team taking it as a compliment rather than an insult or a way to diminish its creativity.
“The team is flattered by the comparisons to Tarkov. It’s really the top game in the genre, and I think every extraction shooter would be delighted to be seen in the same way as Tarkov is.
That being said, Tarkov doesn’t offer the type of immersion that VR can offer. Weapon realism is off the charts in Ghosts of Tabor, with reloading and operation closely mirroring real life counterparts.
If Battlestate ever wants to talk about making Tarkov VR, they’d be more than happy to take that call.”
