Payday developer, Starbreeze, is apparently working on an officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons co-op game, but don’t expect too soon. The game is currently under the codename Project Baxter.
IGN reports that Swedish studio Starbreeze is working on a brand-new game that will feature many of the studio’s calling cards like co-op and games-as-a-service support. While it’s largely remained within the shooter genre, it’s taken up the Dungeons & Dragons license and will take a more fantasy approach to Project Baxter. Details are limited, but what we do know outside of the IP tie-in and developer, it’s gonna be developed using Unreal Engine 5, it’s gonna release on all major platforms, and it will include cross-play.
Two images were also shared, one of a shot of a village and another of an individual character. The images look nice enough, but we can’t shake the poor launch state that Payday 3 released in. It was so bad that CEO Tobias Sjögren apologized for the shoddy state. While the game has improved with more patches coming out, it’s not gonna change the feelings that people have with Starbreeze’s future works.
We’re sure a fantasy co-op game with the Dungeons & Dragons license would be a dream-come-true for some, but we have to have the developer in mind when getting excited about a game like Project Baxter. At least the game doesn’t come out until 2026, so Starbreeze has plenty of time to refine the rough edges of the co-op adventure.
