Ubisoft has delisted its 2014 online-only racing game, The Crew, from digital storefronts as post-launch support ends. The franchise will live on through 2018’s The Crew 2 and most recently September’s The Crew Motorfest.
The news dropped on the game’s Steam page where players can no longer purchase the racing title and are informed that the game is no longer available and that the servers will shut down in a few short months. Notably, though, it seems newbies can perhaps get access to the title through Ubisoft+, but regardless, the game is getting shut down in March.
With The Crew going the way of the Dodo, it once again gives a twinge of credit to those championing preservation, as video games don’t as robust of a means to do preserve as — say — movies or TV shows. Plenty of games are now digital-only or if they have a box associated to it, it’s often an empty case with a download code.
We can’t say we’re surprised that Ubi is pulling support for this game, it’s been around for some years now and at least on Steam, the numbers are dwindling. Frankly, it’s surprising it waited this long, long enough for not just one but two new entries into the series to be made before pulling the plug on the original.
March 31, 2024, is the game’s final day before it shuts down, making the game — even to long-time fans — unable to play.
