Emio wasn’t a horror game after all

After the mysterious trailer leaving players wondering what the heck Nintendo was on, it’s unveiled Emio โ€“ The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. It’s now likely Bloober Team doesn’t have any involvement with the title.

Nintendo shared a chat with game producer Yoshio Sakamoto. It also changed the name of its teaser trailer to the full name. The game features the urban legend of The Smiling Man, a figure that places bags over peoples’ heads — specifically crying girls — and kills them.

It’s nice that a game series as old as Famicom Detective Club is getting a new entry, but it is disappointing that this wasn’t Nintendo’s at a new IP like many speculated. Nintendo has been pretty set in releasing new games in its established IPs and people were hoping for something different. That said, it is still an M-rated game from a directly-linked Nintendo IP, so we can’t be too mad.

This new game follows the 2021 remakes of the original two games. Emio โ€“ The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club will apparently feature a “divisive” ending, so we can look forward to that.

Emio โ€“ The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club launches on August 29, 2024 on the Nintendo Switch.
