Princess Mononoke coming to IMAX in 4K

Be sure to mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 26, as a classic Studio Ghibli movie is coming soon to IMAX screens throughout North America.

Not only is the beloved Studio Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke hitting IMAX, but it will do so in modern 4K resolution. The movie was originally released back on July 12, 1997, as reported by Collider. Watch the trailer on YouTube below:

First released in 1997, PRINCESS MONONOKE is one of Director Hayao Miyazaki’s early features. The now classic title remains a cultural touch point and has maintained an immeasurable influence on modern cinema… The IMAX version of the film was created from a new 4K restoration directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui, who has been involved in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since he first started at the studio in 1993.

This 4K IMAX theatrical rerelease is notable for being only the second Studio Ghibli film in this format, with the first Studio Ghibli title in IMAX being 2023’s The Boy and the Heron. Additionally, both fans and general movie audiences won’t need to choose whether to watch Princess Mononoke in the English dub or in the original Japanese. Instead, the studio will provide both options to watch in Japanese with English subtitles or in the English dub. The English cast features the voices of Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Crudup, Jada Pinkett Smith, and more (according to GKIDS).

Tickets to watch the 4K restoration of Princess Mononoke can be purchased here.
