The Simpsons has “no canon,” exec producer confirms

While The Simpsons has offed characters out of respect for the passing of an actor, this does not mean every time a character dies, it will be forever. Fair warning, spoilers ahead for season finale, Estranger Things.

Executive producer Matt Selman set the record straight with Variety, stating that the series has “no canon.” The series has pushed out a slurry of flash-forward episodes showcasing The Simpsons and all of Springfield years into the future.

“There is no canon. The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!”

Estranger Things capped the most recent season and it involved the death of a key character, that being Marge Simpson. Continuing his statement, Selman explained that she will probably “never be dead ever again.”

“Obviously since the ‘The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time. Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago.”
