Super Mario Galaxy Movie actors hint at new release date for the next Mario film

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is performing decently compared to its predecessor, expanding its lore and galaxy. Its ending has opened an opportunity for more story with another film, which some voice actors have mentioned recently.

The voice actor for the adventurous Toad, Keegan-Michael Key, mentioned the next Mario film during an interview with ScreenRant. He explained how the directors were passionate about creating the ideal Mario projects with the right, exquisite details, which is no different for the possible third film. He predicted the public would see the movie in 2029 at the earliest, which would “be worth the wait.”

“We want to get it right. We want to get everything right. We want to get all the details right. And Michael and Aaron, who are our directors, have a real passion for this. I think they’re as passionate about these projects as the audience is. And so we got to get it right, we got to get it right. So I apologize. But it’ll be worth the wait. It’ll be worth the wait…’29 is better than sometime, right”

It was also previously mentioned by none other than Jack Black himself, during a Cinemax video mentioned by IGN, when the host was asking him and Donald Glover multiple questions relating to Mario. One of the questions made the two formulate a short, rhythmic tune about Bowser’s greatness before Jack mentioned a chance to hear his superb singing to the audience in 2029, implying a special release within three years. Super Mario Bros did debut in theaters on April 5, 2023, before its recent sequel released on April 1, 2026, so it’s not out of the ordinary for the third Mario film to release in a similar time frame. Currently, Nintendo is working to release the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, so any official announcement for the third Mario movie will likely appear post 2027.

“Don’t be surprised if you hear that coming out next time….2029.”
