Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis previously revealed February 12, 2027, as its new release date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Its page was already posted on Steam, which includes a disclaimer for the use of generative AI in its game development.
The developer did step out to explain how generative AI contributed to making Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Eurogamer received a comment from Crystal Dynamics that mentioned AI tools’ effectiveness in hastening the long development process. While many models and levels were influenced by generative AI, the developers still finalized the overall game design through the team. As the disclaimer states on Steam, every generative AI product was either replaced or refined by human developers, especially since the studio prioritizes a high-quality experience for fans.
“At Crystal Dynamics, we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted. Our goal is to empower the creativity and flexibility of our developers to deliver the highest-quality experiences for players everywhere.”
The General Manager of Amazon Games Studio, Jeff Grattis, explained to Polygon about the significance of genAI in the studio’s work culture. Generative AI offers great opportunities to make unique, ambiguous games that weren’t easy to make in previous generations. The studio emphasizes the importance of creating new, demanding games, though still implementing human creativity to make their projects more consistent and high-quality.
“We’ve been pretty bullish on GenAI and I know that’s a very controversial topic, but not so much GenAI in terms of how we make games, but games that can be made on large language models that could not have been made three to five years ago; We think there’s opportunities to make interesting new types of games made by humans, but games that couldn’t have been made three to five years ago.”
Generative AI is currently being welcomed in more companies for shortening development lengths and supporting human creativity. It isn’t solely used to fully create games, as humans still present more quality work. How Tomb Raider may develop will depend on Amazon Games Studio’s decisions.
