IO Interactive starts layoffs after losing its external supporter for its latest original IP

IO Interactive has been interested in trying new original projects that stem from its famous stealth brands, like Hitman and now Agent 007. The company wanted more diverse projects in its portfolio, hence Project Fantasy. The team appeared very eager to develop its creative new project until a recent announcement complicated its development, such as the diminishing staff force.

IO Interactive posted depressing news involving the loss of its external partner, completely restricting the project’s funding. This decision greatly affects the staffing positions, forcing the executives to layoff some of the development team.

The company’s external partner was unknown before Bloomberg confirmed it was from XBOX. This is part of the recently ongoing XBOX Reset plan as the company is recalculating its priorities over different investments. The XBOX representative stated that the amount of the company’s investments will be somewhat similar to last year, though what they will invest in is changing.

“-taking a fresh look at where we invest so we’re focusing on our highest priorities; We’re not reducing our overall investment in games; We expect to invest about the same in content as we did last year. What’s changing is where we’re investing and the kinds of projects we’re backing.”

Luckily, IOI’s online RPG isn’t completely canceled, though its development cycle may be slower due to the team’s smaller size and loss of funding. This situation will force the studio to either contract with a new external partner or self-publish. IO Interactive will keep its community updated about its decisions and projects soon.
