Due to Europe’s upcoming battery regulations, Nintendo is preparing revised Nintendo gaming products that are compliant across European retailers, including a Nintendo Switch 2 model. These new revisions will start becoming available in summer 2026, providing easier access to switch out newly implemented user-replaceable batteries. It’s meant to not only replace the previous models that restrict battery replacements, but also Nintendo Switch hardware within European regions.
The EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 will take effect in mid-February 2027, forcing every technological product to implement user-replaceable batteries. To follow these rules, Nintendo will commence distributing its appropriate hardware revisions in summer 2026 before selling more revised products later on, before mid February 2027. These new products will overtake the availability of the older models, replacing them in the current market.

It seems Nintendo isn’t planning to manufacture the revised Nintendo Switch hardware, except for its original Joy-Cons. Nintendo will continue selling the original Nintendo Switch hardware in the European market until European regulations take effect. This will result in Nintendo closing availability of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED for European retailers in mid February 2027, including the Nintendo Store.
This decision is Nintendo’s early start to transition its priorities to its latest console. There aren’t any confirmed games lined up for the Nintendo Switch, making Rhythm Heaven Groove the last Nintendo Switch exclusive throughout 2026. Any plans left for the decade-old console may be revealed at a later date, whether it’s more support or slower production.
