It’s been nearly 40 years since the classic Star Wars (and sci-fi) spoof movie Spaceballs was released. With a legacy(?) sequel on the way for the 40th anniversary of the original, the first official movie poster for the sequel has finally been unveiled.
As presented by ComicBook, the official poster for Spaceballs: The New One shows two helmet-wearing characters literally combing the sandy desert, and their path is shown as forming the number 2 as an obvious visual marking of the sequel movie. Even one of the tag lines in the poster says “Combing Soon”. Clever work, and props to the movie’s marketing/social media team!
Longtime fans of Spaceballs will also notice that this poster is a reference calling back an iconic scene from the original Spaceballs. Said scene is when Darth Vader spoof villain, Dark Helmet, and his men have been ordered by Spaceball Empire’s President Skroob to comb the desert on the planet Vega in their attempts to find and recover Princess Vespa.
Spaceballs: The New One has been a few decades in the making. While many years have passed since Spaceballs’s release, there have been little actual progress in getting a sequel greenlit. It wasn’t until June 2025 that the elusive Spaceballs sequel was finally announced, with Spaceballs Director Mel Brooks starring in the announcement. Fast forward to April 2026, the Spaceballs sequel had its official title revealed (via the Los Angeles Times).
Further details on the story of Spaceballs: The New One have been presented. Thanks to Gizmodo, Spaceballs 2’s synopsis pokes some fun at the expense of more recent Star Wars movies (and perhaps modern Hollywood as well) under Disney’s ownership. More promotions will take place at next week’s San Diego Comic Con.
Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned! Forty years after the events of the first Spaceballs, fifty years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat. A threat so evil, so unstoppable, so completely lacking in any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.
With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and the Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise releasing TV episodes theatrically, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa’s undisciplined son, Prince Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans are demanding before they discover the hard way that, while some threats you can fight, the reboot is not one of them.
Spaceballs: The New One is set to beam to the big screen on April 23, 2027, a week ahead of ANH returning to theaters to celebrate the Star Wars 50th Anniversary.
