Sega blames Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Sonic Superstars’ underwhelming sales

Without outright naming and “shaming” the game, Sega executives have implied that Sonic Superstars’ underwhelming sales was a matter of a poor release schedule that coincided with a “competing titles in the same genre.” This seems to largely be pointing to Mario Bros. Wonder, which released days after Sonic Superstars.

Earlier this month, Sega held its Q&A session for investors, but only recently was it translated into English. As spotted by VGC, though, it seems the Japanese game maker is blaming Nintendo’s flagship plumber for Sonic Superstars’ underwhelming sales. Other games that released around it in the similar genre camp included SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake and Trolls Remix Rescue, though, we doubt these games put as large of a dent in potential sales as the Big N’s flagship platformer.

It’s even worse considering the developer had spent a ton of money on advertising the game during the holiday season, only for it to not get a strong return for it. Consider this another point toward the two devs’ rivalry.
