The Best PlayStation 5 games launching this July

Summer is here and after a hot month of showcase announcements from Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo, we are ready to cool off with some much needed new releases. Here are the top PlayStation 5 games launching this July:

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

Dawntrail is the upcoming fifth expansion pack to Final Fantasy XIV. The expansion follows the Warrior of Light and companions as they journey West to the continent of Tural. New stories, characters, worlds, and foes await you, alongside two new jobs โ€” viper and pictomancer. Dawntrail will also feature a graphics overhaul and players will once again enjoy an amazing original score by Masayoshi Soken. With every new expansion, Final Fantasy XIV solidifies itself as one of the very best in the Final Fantasy series and one of the all-time great MMORPGs. Dawntrail looks like another precious piece that adds to that legacy.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail launches July 2 on PS5, priced at $39.99. Will also become available on PC, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S.

Zenless Zone Zero

Zenless Zone Zero is the anticipated new free-to-play title from miHoYo, developers and publishers of Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Zenless takes place in a post-apocalyptic metropolis known as New Eridu. Entities known as Ethereal have traveled out into the human world from portals called Hollows. The Ethereal have nearly wiped out humanity.

Players will take the role of a “Proxy” โ€” a professional who guides people through the Hollows. The Proxy will recruit new members to fight the Ethereal. Expect to be greeted by a zany cast of characters, a futuristic setting, and action-RPG combat. Judging by early reactions and the footage available, Zenless Zone Zero is updating the miHoYo RPG formula with a sleek and cool futuristic offering that is sure to please anime and RPG fans alike.

Zenless Zone Zero releases free-to-play July 4 on PS5. Will also become available on PC, iOS, and Android.

Darkest Dungeon 2

The sequel to Darkest Dungeon brings players more gothic horror RPG wrapped in roguelike mechanics. Darkest Dungeon 2 is described as:

Form a party, equip your stagecoach, and set off across the decaying landscape on a last gasp quest to avert the apocalypse. The greatest dangers you face, however, may come from within…

Darkest Dungeon 2 features an affinity system where heroes bond with each other or “grate on each others’ nerves” to lead toward combat synergies or dysfunction. Each expedition is also less than five hours, and any progress you make unveils new hero abilities, items, and stagecoach upgrades that can be used on your next journey.

Darkest Dungeon 2 was released on PC last year to great critical acclaim. Console players are now going to be able to experience it as well. The question is whether the sequel will indeed be elevated on the PS5 or kept largely the same.

Darkest Dungeon 2 releases July 15 on PS5, priced at $39.99. It is already available on PC and will become available on the PS4 and Switch.

Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus

Bo is a beautiful 2.5D hand drawn and side scrolling Metroidvania fused with Japanese folklore. You play as Bo, a celestial fox “descended from the heavens to fulfil a mysterious ancient prophecy.” Use your legendary bล staff to bounce and glide through dreamlike landscapes, strange and adorable yokai, and massive monsters from Japanese folklore.

Bo looks like a homage to other great titles like Okami and Hollow Knight. The art style is gorgeous and the side scrolling is fast-paced and engaging. Bo looks to be a special game indeed. I’d be on the lookout for this one if I were you!

Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus launches July 18 on PS5, price yet to be announced. Will also become available on PC, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

Flintlock’s release date was announced during the recent and great Xbox Showcase along with some sleek gunplay action. Flintlock’s story is described as:

The Door to the Great Below has been opened unleashing the Gods and their armies of the Dead. The lands of Kian are besieged, the city of Dawn is on the brink of destruction. Itโ€™s time for the Coalition army to fight back. Embrace vengeance, gunpowder and magic as you embark on an epic journey to defeat the Gods, close the door and retake the world.

Flintlock features souls-like genre elements together with rapid mobility mechanics for what promises to be a fast and unforgiving combat experience. The game also includes melee, gunpowder, and magic in rhythmic battles where combos chain together to “create a deadly dance.” Flintlock attempts to shake up the souls-like genre and by making it more fast-paced and including verticality and traversal as part of combat. We can’t wait to see the results!

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn releases July 18 on PS5, priced at $39.99. Will also become available on PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
