Activision strips previous-gen hardware from the latest Call of Duty games

Activision recently announced Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 for the next-gen consoles and PC. Season one will allow the integration of Call of Duty Warzone, which led to the developers announcing the closing support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Call of Duty Warzone on previous-gen consoles will trickle down its services before the official launch of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4. Call of Duty: Warzone will solely restrict new downloads for older consoles by stripping its availability from the digital stores on June 4. Anyone who owns the game can still install and play the game during the starting closure. Anyone can progress in Call of Duty: Warzone to gain in-game content like usual until the in-game store gets taken down for older consoles on June 25, 2026.

Once Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 launches season one, Call of Duty: Warzone will officially shut down for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It won’t be possible for older-gen consoles to access the game unless upgrading to the next-gen consoles. The in-game content for Call of Duty: Warzone is recorded in the Activision account system, giving access to any owner who upgrades to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
