Fighting EX Layer is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special price change through Steam and PS4 stores for just under a dollar. An AKIRA developer took his time to explain the game’s release on multiple platforms and respond to curious fans, including some pitches for crossplay.
The developer explained the major consequences of implementing crossplay for the AKIRA company. The expensive maintenance costs to keep up the feature would force the studio into bankruptcy. The only solution for crossplay implementation would be for the game to reach over an additional million sales, along with its entire season pass.
It was also mentioned about switching in-game engines to lower crossplay maintenance costs, though it doesn’t seem worth it to apply the change for the current Fighting EX Layer title. The developer did imply a possibility of making a newer Fighting EX Layer game with a cost-effective in-game engine for crossplay. It’s the best opportunity to develop the current next-gen console versions, but the developers will currently focus on supporting the series on previous-gen consoles until further notice.
