Following its 2023 reveal, people were pretty excited for Black Panther to jump into the game scene with its own dedicated game under the eyes of Cliffhanger Games. Unfortunately, it’s been axed and its reason has supposedly been uncovered.
Per Bloomberg (via Insider Gaming), the game was canceled due to its lengthy pre-production phase. This pre-production phase spanned the last four years, having begun development in general in 2021. EA leadership wasn’t happy that Cliffhanger couldn’t move things along faster. The studio had hit internal milestones and was actively hiring staff to further production.
Per the report, many of the workers were hired within the last year, so clearly something within Cliffhanger’s leadership or work culture was holding it back. Obviously, it could’ve been overarching EA leadership that led to a tumultuous relationship between staff, but whatever the case was, we’ll never know as the studio has closed down and the Black Panther game shelved for good.
Beyond that, though, EA still remains adamant that three Marvel-tied games are in the pipeline, with one of them being an Iron Man game developed by Dead Space Remake studio, Motive Studio.
