Blizzard decides to skip BlizzCon this year

Very rarely does Blizzard not hold its own event since debuting BlizzCon all the way back in 2005, but it seems this year, it plans on taking a breather. The World of Warcraft dev has also confirmed that it was a decision Blizzard made rather than its parent, Microsoft.

A recent blog post shared the news, though at the time many believed Microsoft egged Blizzard on to skip the year. It wasn’t until Windows Central stamped out the rumor. To subsidize the lack of BlizzCon 2024, the California game dev is going to host multiple global events. The report also indicates that the decision was made mostly because the stuff it has to share doesn’t align with a major event at the end of the year.

Instead of tossing everything into one mega event, Blizzard is testing the waters of multiple little events, highlighting singular games like World of Warcraft and Vessel of Hatred, Diablo 4’s first expansion. While it’s going to be bizarre not having this big event, we can’t blame the Santa Monica studio for wanting to test something new.

Blizzard did stress that this isn’t going to be an ongoing thing — it won’t go the way of E3, instead it’s just taking a breather and likely to return in the future, though, it doesn’t specifically say what year we can expect.
