Day Zero patches “encourages poor development,” ex-GTA dev says

Somehow flying under the radar when it was fresh off the press, former Rockstar staff Colin Anderson points out the biggest problem with Day Zero patches. Ever since consoles could connect to the internet, patching bugs and glitches became a common thing post-release.

Taking to Twitter some time back, Anderson, who served as the studio’s audio manager, states that he misses the days when developers couldn’t just path its game so easily after it was out in the wild. He also notes that the “Day Zero patch mentality” encourages developers not to put its best foot forward because the team can just fix it later, anyway.

As a developer, I miss the discipline of knowing there was no way to โ€œfixโ€ a game once it had been manufactured. The โ€œDay Zero Patchโ€ mentality today just encourages poor development and management practices, and itโ€™s a worse customer experience too. #gamedevelopment https://t.co/ZcShwIYQVR

Anderson goes on to explain in replies that it was the music industry’s fault with the “we’ll fix it in the mix” mentality, which paved the way for filmmakers to adopt the “we’ll fix it in post” mantra.
