Dragon Age creator believes series is dead following Veilguard’s poor reception

The poor reception of Dragon Age: The Veilguard might’ve been the killing blow to BioWare’s long-standing fantasy RPG franchise.

Creator David Gaider recently spoke with PC Gamer (via Eurogamer) and discussions arose about the future of the franchise following 2024’s The Veilguard. Unfortunately, he sees it as “unlikely” that we’ll see a new installment if EA has the reigns. He also shared just how close EA would be to just shelving any given project BioWare was working on.

“We were always one breath away from the [current] project being shelved. The thing that happened is that we kept releasing games, and it would sell much better than they thought it should, and it kept surprising them.”

Of course, Gaider’s experience with BioWare — and by extension EA — ended in 2016 as he departed to become the creative director of Beamdog before eventually co-founding his own studio, Summerfall Studios.

Overall, Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet sales goals, which higher-ups had somehow blamed on its lack of live service elements while speaking to investors (via Eurogamer), and its less-than-stellar audience reception didn’t help, either.

In our review, we asserted “fans looking for this game to remind them of Origins will be sad when they play this.” But, noted that it is “is a really good, fun game.”
