In what feels like an out of left field move, Google Play suddenly started spouting off a thread about Sonic the Hedgehog. While not particularly a bad thing since the Blue Blur’s having his own cultural moment, a lot of it was wrong.
Over the weekend, Google Play’s Twitter posted a thread detail Sonic’s extensive history with each post signifying him getting “older.” The problem is it was rife with false information from the very start. In the first post, it details the original game being 8-bit, which famously it’s not — it’s 16-bit. Furthermore, as pointed out by IGN, the screenshot was from a 2013 mobile game while other posts were also stemming from mobile titles. While thematic to the American tech company’s platform, it’s kinda disingenuous, to say the least.
Sonic, but as you scroll he gets older and older

To top all that off, the last post in the thread appeared to be some poorly modified screenshot of Sonic Prime’s Season 4. Frankly, it was kinda silly seeing just how jaunted it all was, but at least it seemed like Google Play knew that it was a wacky thread, even if — hopefully — it didn’t know just how wrong it was with the lore.
It got so much attention that Sega itself chimed in asking what the tech giant was even doing.
what are you doing
