Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ran the risk of running on 3 disks

Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth ran into a small hitch in development, almost leading it to run on three disks. We knew it would be larger than FF7 Remake, but it’s wild to think it could’ve run on three disks.

Twitter use ILovecloti (via TheGamer) pointed out some highlights of a recent interview during co-director Motomu Toriyama’s trip to Taiwan. The responses were vague, of course, as a lot of these questions could easily lead to some crazy levels of spoilers. Among the non-vague responses were discussing if players would have to swap disks during their play session. However, due to modern gaming favoring pre-loading games, though, this won’t be the case.

Apparently, though, the FF team managed to cram all that it could into two disks to make the game not require three because the game is so “rich.” If it were requiring three disks, this would mark the first game of its kind on the PS5.

“No, today’s games are pre-installed on the console before playing, so there is no need to change the game. In fact, the content of Rebirth this time is so rich that the production team tried their best to cram it into two UHD BD disks, otherwise it might have become a three-disk package.”

So, where is all that space going? Well, we know the game is vast, spanning 100 hours, 40 of which are dedicated to the story, so we can kind of see how all that could build up.
