FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki asserts that mass layoffs won’t happen at the Japanese studio “as long as this company is my responsibility.” This comes following the mass layoffs that have happened over the past few years and the studio closures that have befell the industry.
Speaking with PC Gamer, he said that as long as he’s in charge, layoffs are something he is gonna avoid and believes that Kadokawa, its parent company, shares the mindset and that layoffs aren’t something he would wish on the staff in a million years. He likened his belief to Satoru Iwata, the late Nintendo president who took a pay cut to avoid layoffs.
“I think it’s true. And I think the people at Kadokawa, our parent company, understand that I hold this view very strongly. While we can’t say 100% – we can’t say with complete certainty what the future’s going to hold for From and Kadokawa – at least as long as this company is my responsibility, that’s something I would not let happen. So hopefully our players and our fans can take a little bit of assurance from that.”
It’s hard to imagine FromSoft falling into a situation of layoffs — not only has the better of its library proven to be successful, but we’re confident the first and last Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, which launches in tomorrow, will spark more sales, interest, and discussions around FromSoft’s 2022 Soulsborne.
