With the latest announcement regarding the release of the Sora amiibo today, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has officially confirmed that Smash Bros. Ultimate development comes to a close. What served as many “hype” character reveals, balance patches, and updates to the game at launch has been set to end from this point onward.
On Twitter, Sakurai posted the news, having this to say (translation below).
“Sora amiibo released today! Thank you very much to everyone involved. (I think it’s amazing) The original perfect design and the color coding are precise and perfect. The sculpt and pose are both good. Now that all the fighters have been made into amiibo, I guess my work on “Smash Bros. Ultimate” is finally coming to an end. Thank you for your hard work.”
So what does this mean for the future of the game moving forward? Overall, many fans have speculated for there to be a “deluxe” edition of the game to come out sometime in the future. Others believe that they will just have to wait for the next installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, which may arrive years later.
December 7, 2023, would have marked the game’s fifth anniversary, and its last DLC fighter (Sora) was released all the way back on October 18, 2021. There have been recent spirits added to the game, as well as the latest patch of version 13.0.2 to support the newest amiibo release, but apart from that, it looks like the game has finally reached its end.
