Nintendo cautions use of unauthorized Wii U online services

Despite closing the online functions of the Wii U, Nintendo has come forward to caution existing owners of the long-since abandoned hardware of using unauthorized services as they may pose a security risk. Wii U’s online features shut down back in April 2024.

The Japanese giant’s customer service Twitter fired off a short message to those who are thinking about using said services. A translation can be read below.

“We have confirmed the existence of unauthorized services that replace functions such as online play for the Wii U, which ended service on April 9, 2024. Please refrain from using such services as they may pose unexpected security risks.”

Now, it’s important to note that Nintendo’s not actively going after services that are keeping the online features going, like Pretendo, which got to the point that you don’t even need to hack your system to use its unofficial online service on your Wii U. Speaking of Pretendo, the people behind it also took to Twitter to sympathize with Nintendo’s stance while using it to leverage its skin in the game.

Pretendo noted that its tools are all open source and that it’s “committed to user safety.” This even extends to releasing patches of games Nintendo no longer supports.

We understand Nintendo’s warning, always be cautious of what you’re installing and do proper research! That said, our tools/servers are open source and we are committed to user safety, going so far as to release security patches for games Nintendo themselves no longer supports 💜 https://t.co/3TvMZrYCGT
