Nintendo is discontinuing My Nintendo Gold Points this year

Nintendo is sunsetting its My Nintendo Gold Points system, which unsurprisingly has left fans pretty frustrated. Starting on March 24, Gold Points will no longer be earned.

Nintendo revealed (via Nintendo Everything) that the service is coming to a close, as well as an FAQ surrounding the closure. It answered questions like how pre-orders work, which basically goes something like if the pre-order was made up to or on March 24, points will be granted regardless of the game’s release date.

In case you don’t know what My Nintendo Gold Points is, it’s a promotional thing for Nintendo, after purchasing select games, you’ll earn points, typically 5% of the game’s value or 1% if it’s a physical copy. These points can be turned around and used to purchase digital goods, such as new games or DLC. All-in-all, if you’re a big Nintendo buyer, it’s not a bad deal.

What with the closure, we can only assume this is in preparation for the Nintendo Switch 2. Perhaps Nintendo doesn’t want Gold Points to apply to games on the new console and rather than keep things up for the Switch games, it’s just more logical to cull the service altogether.
