Nintendo Switch 2 is already set to become one of the most historic consoles in video game history. The technology it has improved on and introduced is setting a new standard for hardware in the industry. As 2026 begins, even more validation rolls in as Nintendo’s newest console stays well ahead of the PlayStation 4’s sales track record up to its seven-month period.
Per Mat Piscatella from Circana, “Nintendo Switch 2 remains the fastest selling video game hardware platform in tracked history. Unit sales of Nintendo Switch 2 are 35% ahead of PlayStation 4’s sales pace after 7 months in market.”
PlayStation has several of the highest selling, and fastest selling video game consoles of all time. For the Nintendo Switch 2 to be this far ahead of the PS4’s sales proves that Nintendo is doing enough to keep production moving and keep hardware on shelves, while also producing an attractive software library to sustain sales past the launch window.
Nintendo’s hybrid console-handheld system will sill have challenges in 2026 in beyond. Due to the AI boom, RAM is continuously growing more expensive. Having already pushed past the United States’ tariff situation, Nintendo may have already pushed its limit on balancing consumer prices with manufacturing costs. A price increase may be on the horizon for not just the Nintendo Switch 2, but all video game hardware. The fate of the Switch 2’s record may rest in the fate of Nintendo’s response to the RAM cost situation.
There is still much excitement about the Switch 2’s upcoming exclusive and third-party releases. With Pokémon Day just over a month away, and the next Nintendo Direct likely premiering within the first half of the year, Nintendo still has opportunities to match this speculated price increase with high quality software with will keep sales high and on record pace.
