Path of Exile 2 has delayed early access release

Path of Exile game director, Jonathan Rogers announced a delay for the game’s early access release. Many that were looking forward to playing the game in early access will now have to wait until December 6 to play, a three-week delay.

It’s noted on Twitter, but hey, all things considered, this is not a crazy amount of time to have to wait, and the delay is not that long compared to other delays with games that we have seen in recent months or even years. But still, it can create challenges for fans that have waited a long time for the second installment of PoE. Also challenging for those that may have scheduled time off from work or school in order to have time to play.

Game director, Jonathan Rogers, posted a video explanation on the circumstances that caused the delay, and was very apologetic during the video.

In order to ensure a smooth launch, Path of Exile 2's Early Access will be delayed for 3 weeks. The new date is December 6th PST. Statement from Game Director Jonathan Rogers below. pic.twitter.com/Bk8Ti8u94d

Rogers discusses the problems the team has faced but makes clear that the game itself is not the reason for the delay, but rather infrastructure difficulties that have taken his team longer to work on.

โ€œWell, it turns out it isnโ€™t really the game itself that weโ€™re behind on, itโ€™s a bunch of server-side infrastructure work that is taking us a lot longer than we expectedโ€

Rogers also gives some good information on some details regarding what infrastructure challenges the team is facing.

โ€œOne of the key promises we made is that all your microtransactions will work across both PoE 1 and 2. In order to that, we have to integrate the account systems for not only PoE 1 and 2, but also for the console realms as well. This meant changing a lot of things.

Not only do we have to create a bunch of new systems, we have to make sure that all the old data is backwards compatible with them as well. And when you start migrating databases that are this old and with this much data, you find all sorts of strange demons in there.

We have to get everything perfect so that nobody loses anything they paid for and nobody has their account broken,โ€ Rogers added. โ€œAt the same time, because weโ€™re changing all this backend code, we have to do a lot of load testing to make sure the whole thing doesnโ€™t fall over when we get the huge number of players weโ€™re expecting at launch.”

Path of Exile 2 will feature a whole new campaign and will be a free-to-play action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games.

Early access of Path of Exile 2 will release now on December 6, 2024.
