Research firm Ampere Analysis recently revealed that Sony’s console once again came on top of the industry for 2023. The PS5 outsold the Xbox Series X|S by almost 3-to-1.
PS5 sales were up by about 65% to 22.5 million units sold this year, per Financial Times. Comparatively, Xbox Series X|S sales declined by 15% to 7.6 million. The Nintendo Switch still turned in an impressive 16.4 million units sold, an 18% decline, despite being at the end of its life-cycle, no doubt thanks to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
In an interview at Reuters, the PS5’s strong momentum is backed up by Eric Lempel, Sony’s Senior Vice President for Global Marketing. Lempel confirmed that Sony recorded its best-ever November for PlayStation console sales, which has now passed 50 million units sold since November 2020.
With ambitions running high, Sony is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles by the end of this fiscal year ending in March 2024. If successful, this target would surpass the record set by the original PlayStation, which shipped 22.6 million units over one fiscal year. The PS5 is also well on track to overtake the PS4 in lifetime sales, which sold 117 million units since its release in 2013.
This momentum will most likely continue into 2024 as the PS5 is looking at several major releases to start off the year, including the Last of Us Part II Remastered’s release on January 19 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launching on February 29.
Smash Jump recently reported on details emerging about Rebirth, including its story and side content length, as well as the timed exclusivity clause.
