“Real fans” would pay $80 for Borderlands 4, Gearbox says

Gearbox Software bigwig Randy Pitchford might be on the fence about introducing that $80 price tag to Borderlands 4, but he’ll not think of you as a real fan if you don’t find a way to buy the game.

The controversial exec took to Twitter, asserting that it’s not his call if the game is $80, but also stating that a “real fan” would “find a way to make it happen” before going off on a story about saving up money while working at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach to buy Starflight on the Sega Genesis back in 1991.

“If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”

The idea of increasing games to $80 was floated around by Nintendo, starting with Mario Kart World, following four to five years of games fostering a new standard of $70. This new price hasn’t sat well with gamers who already felt tons of games releasing as late haven’t been warranting the lofty price point.
