Rec Room to shut down in 2026 despite 10 years of growth

Rec Room previously earned astounding success with over 150 million players socializing across consoles, mobiles, and PC platforms. Despite the game’s growth in player base, its profitable performance has dropped due to the growing expenses in the VR market. No amount of support could recover the game’s sustainability from its dwindling losses, forcing the developers to close the game on June 1, 2026, at 12 pm PST.

Several final updates are scheduled before Rec Room’s final active day. These updates will currently lock certain in-game features, like the options for new account creations, PR+ memberships, friend requests, and Roomie Energy. Later updates before June will restrict more features, like token-related purchases and redemptions on May 1, 2026, and creator-awarded tokens on May 18, 2026.

Even though Rec Room will close entirely, the developers are opening opportunities to physicalize the VR experience. Any player can download in-game photos to commemorate the most cherished social memories, along with the unique “final report card” as a memento of the in-game avatar. Exclusively for creators, rooms and inventions are available to download through data formats, recording them as designs that only work through the Steam PC build.

There are also several more benefits that will last until the upcoming shutdown, like the extended active PR+ memberships and use of tokens. The developers would like to express their gratitude to the community by offering an 80% discount for every first-party content in stores and stripping PR+ requirements from certain PR+ only content. After its final date, players won’t be able to access Rec Room, rec.net, and any online services for Rec Room Studio.
