Shocking news today as Bluepoint Games, a studio owned by PlayStation manufacturer, Sony, is shutting down.
The news comes as a surprise as the team at Bluepoint became a go-to for remakes and remasters of classic Sony titles. In 2018 the team shifted from upscaled ports to ground up remakes of fan favorite titles, leading to the PS4 release of Shadow of the Colossus and the PS5 launch title Demon’s Souls.
Bloomberg previously reported on a live service God of War title the studio was developing that was cancelled early 2025. Before this the studio acted as support on God of War: Ragnarok. Notably, Sony announced a full remake of the original God of War trilogy being done by Santa Monica Studios. It’s unclear at this time if Bluepoint staff may be folded into that project or if staff may be restructured into general support teams.
The closure comes as part of a wider industry trend of restructuring. Recently Ubisoft announced the cancellation of a number of unannounced titles and a general refocusing, while Microsoft has made sweeping changes to the Xbox brand and Game Pass system that has defined it over the past few years.
While its interpretations of the art rubbed some purists the wrong way, general opinion of Bluepoint was favorable and impressed with the fidelity of their craft. Its sudden closure is yet another sign of instability in the industry, and may be a sign of things to come.
