June 2026 has been a considerably big month for Spyro fans. Spyro is returning next year in his new game A Realm Beyond, and Tom Kenny is returning to voice the purple dragon. However, there is one highly notable creator that will unfortunately NOT be returning…
In a recent exclusive interview with The Independent (via Insider Gaming) The Police band’s co-founder/drummer Stewart Copeland confirmed that he won’t be behind writing the soundtrack for the new 2027 Spyro title. He stated that the game has been moving in the direction of a more modernized soundtrack, and that he doesn’t hold any reservations against not being called on to work on the OST. As of this writing, the devs at Toys For Bob have not publicly revealed who is the music composer in place of Copeland.
This may be a potential topic of contention among Spyro fans, as it may raise concern over how the new Spyro game’s music will be like without Stewart Copeland at the helm. While the music from the reveal trailer could give an idea of what a modernized Spyro music might sound like, fans shouldn’t necessarily take the reveal trailer’s music as being in the final game. Looking back to the Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s reveal trailer, the music was not used in the final game. It’s possible that the music was only meant for the trailer, and could be the same in A Realm Beyond’s case. At any rate, Stewart Copeland’s musical work will surely be missed by longtime Spyro fans. After all, he was the composer for Spyro games since the first title’s release back in 1998.
Stewart’s absence from A Realm Beyond still won’t be the first time the franchise has been without him. Copeland stayed on as Spyro’s music composer through the PlayStation trilogy and into 2002’s Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. He was replaced for 2004’s Spyro: A Hero’s Tail by composers Keith Leary, Paul Lawler, David Marsden, and Craig Sharmat (according to the game’s end credits). The absence lasted through the Legend of Spyro trilogy in the mid/late 2000s and into the Skylanders era in 2011. He finally returned in 2018 to write a new opening theme for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy: Tiger Train, and provided assistance to TFB audio engineer Stephan Vankov in remastering the classic Spyro trilogy’s music for Reignited.
It should’ve been a no-brainer for Spyro’s latest return to be accompanied by his original composer… or at the very least, have Stewart Copeland consult the new composer, like he previously did with Stephan Vankov. Regardless, even without Spyro’s original composer, here’s to hoping that A Realm Beyond’s OST will still become a soundtrack worthy of the franchise, balancing nostalgia while revitalizing the franchise for a new generation of fans.
