This year might be the year of long development cycles finally running their course with Hollow Knight: Silksong, but one game we can almost always count on to be “still a long way off” is The Elder Scrolls VI. That said, it’s an “everyday thing” in the studio’s workday.
Todd Howard confirmed the game is still in the works and still a “long way off.” He also confirmed that the game is an “everyday thing” while Bethesda’s got hundreds of people working on Fallout with 76 and seemingly some unannounced stuff, if that “some other things” comment is anything to go by.
“We have hundreds of people on Fallout right now, with 76 and some other things we’re doing, but The Elder Scrolls 6 is the everyday thing.”
Skyrim is the last entry to the series, but Bethesda’s been rereleasing it pretty regularly, this game is still a game from the PS3/Xbox 360 era — it’s still a 14-year-old game that’s been spruced up and introduced to the masses. Meanwhile, Howard admitted that the series has been away for too long, but simply put, the team needed a “creative reset.”
“I do like to have a break between them, where it isn’t like a ‘plus one’ sequel. I think it’s also good for an audience to have a break – The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset.”
In the interview, he also joked that it could just be a shadowdrop, but also made it clear that’s his “perfect vision,” but he’s “not saying this is going to happen.” We can only liken it to Hi-Fi Rush and Virtuos’ The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
“I like to just announce stuff and release it. My perfect version – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.”
