Epic Games recently hosted a showcase to reveal the Unreal Engine 5.8, a major update release of Unreal Engine 5. It introduces multiple new additions that make development tasks easier and more convenient, such as creating in-game nature with the Procedural Vegetation Editor and animating consistent expressions with the improved Curve Editor and Sequencer workflows. One of its new features provides an easier opportunity for demanding games to perform better at lower GPU costs for broader gaming platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2 and low-end PCs.
Lumen Lite is a new addition designed to preserve graphical visuals at significantly lower GPU costs with Irradiance fields. Its medium global illumination level lets various games consistently target 60 FPS for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Unreal Engine 5.8 is the last version for improving Unreal Engine 5 before the company shifts over to the upcoming Unreal Engine 6. The new system is being designed to make game development more accessible and easier for broader creators, letting them dwell in creativity.
