Xbox is preparing an all-digital future with Project Helix’s new feature for physical media

Digital gaming has been trending in the current gaming market, with public interest straying further from physical media. After PlayStation recently announced the upcoming closure of its physical disc production, Xbox seems to be following suit with a new method for Project Helix.

Sources from Windows Central reported that Project Helix will most likely exclude a physical disc drive, similar to PlayStation’s next hardware. Xbox is taking a step further by making the transition to digital gaming more convenient for its fanbase rather than enforcing the change, like PlayStation. Xbox is producing what’s called “Positron,” a feature described as digitizing physical games in the targeted hardware, letting owners use their physical discs without abandoning them on their shelf.

More information about the new disc-to-digital formula was discovered recently by The Verge sources, who confirmed the developers are testing the feature now called “enable Disc2Digital.” It analyzes physical games to create digital entitlements on active Microsoft accounts, giving older physical games more use for modern play. It also ties in the convenient features of Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for eligible games, making them available to stream or transition between devices. It’s still very early in development, with its compatibility limited to Xbox Series and Xbox One physical games. This doesn’t just lock out the original Xbox and Xbox 360 games, but also a few Xbox One games, depending on the games’ conditions and developments at launch.

“It all depends on how and when the disc was manufactured and it may not have the features we need for this program,”

This new feature is still in its early work-in-progress build, though its intentions are pretty clear. Its benefits will lengthen the use for grown Xbox collections through upcoming Xbox hardware. Microsoft will definitely provide more updates as the new feature progresses in development, along with Project Helix.
