Crystal Dynamics and Bit Bot Media have joined forces to revive the long-since dead Legacy of Kain franchise with a prequel graphic novel. Dubbed Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise, this lengthy-titled piece of media will be the first crumb of the franchise’s existence for over two decades now.
A Backerkit page is already live. According to IGN, The Dead Shall Rise is poised to be a prequel to Soul Reaver and will give us clues how Raziel came to serve Kain. What’s nice is it seems the people associated to the project are very much happy to be part of the team, with artist Joshua Viola noting that not only did he make a Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver poster for his class, but he also dons a Raziel tattoo.
The comic team also is, of course, partnered with Crystal Dynamics siphoning unreleased Legacy of Kain lore to keep things concise and is looking to make the comic a “truly special endeavor.”

Even today, Raziel graces my tattoo sleeve—a testament to my deep connection with this universe. Fans can expect a project infused with that same passion. Working directly with creatives from Crystal Dynamics and reuniting with former collaborators makes this a truly special endeavor.”
Legacy of Kain kicked off as a Silicon Knights project published by the now-Embracer Group owned studio. Hope isn’t lost, not only if this goes well could we see remasters and remakes of the older entries, Embracer itself showed a level of interest in reviving the cult IP. On top of that, in 2021, the games were released on GOG.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise graphic novel currently has no release window outside of the campaign starting later this year.
