On this day in 2005, the highly anticipated conclusion to the prequel trilogy and entire Star Wars saga (pre-Disney) was released in theaters.
Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith has finally reached its 20th anniversary, though the celebrations have already started ahead of time. May 19 may be the movie’s theatrical release, but select theaters have already offered special 20th anniversary screenings from April 25 – April 30, as reported officially by StarWars.com. In fact, cast members Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) and Samuel Jackson (Mace Windu) surprised fans attending the screening at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre:
When it comes to looking back at the pre-release hype of Revenge of the Sith from 2005, Star Wars fans have plenty to fondly reminisce over. Revenge of the Sith’s marketing had everything from Hasbro’s tie-in toys (and its commercials) to a number of tie-in video games such as the ROTS game itself (which had its own 20th Anniversary on May 5) and the classic Star Wars: Battlefront II. Of course, Star Wars fans can still playfully joke/reference Episode 3’s various one-liners, thanks to a never-ending abundance of prequel memes. Whether it’s “Hello there/General Kenobi,” “I am the Senate,” or “I have the High Ground,” the internet/meme side of the movie’s fandom has fans more than covered.
Star Wars Episode 3 concludes the Prequel Trilogy that explores the events set before the iconic Original Trilogy. Three years into the Clone Wars, fans witnessed the eventually fall of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side, the fall of the Jedi order and rise of the evil Galactic Empire. Revenge of the Sith is available to stream on Disney Plus, as well as physical releases on DVD/Blu-Ray.
