The Star Wars 50th anniversary may still be two years away, but mark your calendars for the month of April just the same.
Straight from StarWars.com, special plans have been announced ahead of the upcoming franchise anniversary. Star Wars fans can look forward to returning to theaters starting on April 30, 2027 to watch Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope. While the special theatrical re-release to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary is expected to run through Star Wars Day May 4, there is no word yet on exactly how long the first Star Wars movie will run in theaters.
As most fans know, A New Hope was originally released back in May 25, 1977 with the simple title “Star Wars” before receiving its subtitle on April 10, 1981. However, such theatrical re-releases have happened multiple times before, including in recent times. Just a few months ago, Revenge of the Sith returned to theaters to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary. Also on top of that, May 3 last year saw The Phantom Menace receive its theatrical re-release to celebrate 25 years after the original run (via Fandango). Additionally, The Phantom Menace also had a 3D re-release back in 2012, though subsequent 3D re-releases for Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were cancelled following the time George Lucas sold Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise to Disney later that same year (as reported by Film Stories).
