Arguably one of the few most-beloved light novel fantasy stories in the market, this long-running series is finally coming to an end.
According to Anime News Network, the 21st volume of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Danmachi in short) will be the light novel’s final arc. This was confirmed by the author of the series, Fujino Ōmori, based on the 20th volume of the light novel, which was released on December 15, 2024.
ÅŒmori launched the first novel together with illustrator Suzuhito Yasuda in January 2013. In the following year, they both released the light novel spinoff in Janaury 2014 titled Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria. In North America, Yen Press is releasing the original novel series alongside the spinoffs together with the respective manga versions.
Here’s the synopsis based on the first volume described by Yen Press:
In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans. He wants to pick up girls. Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe. Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not. After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth–even chance encounters with beautiful women. The only problem? He’s the one who winds up the damsel in distress!
An anime adaptation was first released in April 2015, with the second season releasing in July 2019. The third season premiered in October 2020 and the fourth season, which was split into two parts, was released in July 2022 with the second cour premiering in January 2023.
The fifth season of the television anime is currently airing via HIDIVE with a total 15 episodes.
Even with Danmachi’s novel wrapping up soon, there’s still more to see with the anime currently airing. With how many seasons the anime has spawned, there’s a good chance the anime will also adapt every single volume of the novel.
