George R. R. Martin teases an Elden Ring adaptation

In a recent blog post from the end of June, acclaimed author of A Song of Night and Fire (also known as Game of Thrones), George R. R. Martin teased that an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring video game may be in the works.

In the blog post, Martin addressed rumors of a potential Elden Ring adaptation.

“Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”

Martin, whose famous work has already seen successful adaptations in the massively popular Game of Thrones television series and the ongoing HBO show House of the Dragon, also worked on the world building for the FromSoftware developed title. The blog post served as a celebration of an award that Martin and game director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, received for the writing of Elden Ring.

Martin celebrated the achievement but gave majority of the credit to Miyazaki and the FromSoftware team.

“In other awards news, back in May of 2023, SFWA presented its Nebula Award for Game Writing to ELDEN RING, from Bandai Entertainment and From Software. I did the worldbuilding for that project; Hidetaka Miyazaka and his team did all the rest. We were both honored with trophies.   I was not at the awards banquet, however, and in any case only one trophy was on hand for the event. That one went home to Japan, where it truly belongs.”

Elden Ring continues to achieve success with the most recent DLC expansion to the game, Shadow of the Erdtree, selling 5 million copies in 3 days and receiving critical acclaim. In total, Elden Ring has sold over 25 million copies worldwide ranking it as one of the highest selling games of all time along with the likes of Grand Theft Auto IV and Cyberpunk 2077.

Recently, Miyazaki himself spoke to The Guardian and revealed his own thoughts on an adaptation of Elden Ring in other mediums, not seeing a reason to push the idea away.

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”

With FromSoftware’s openness to interpretations of their story beyond the gaming medium, Martin’s tease, the massive success of Elden Ring, and the successful track record of adaptations related to Martin’s work, it seems all is pointing to an adaptation happening sometime in the future.
