It’s not December 25 yet, but Gundam fans will be given an early Christmas present with a new project announcement coming from the beloved mecha franchise.
According to Anime News Network, animation studios Khara and Sunrise are set to animate the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced as g-quax) television series which was announced during the live-streamed Gundam Conference Winter 2024 event. On January 17, 2025, a re-edited version titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, featuring various episodes will screen first in theaters.
A special announcement trailer has been uploaded on the official Gundam Info YouTube channel with English captions available.
The first visual art has also been revealed and can be seen here on Anime Trending’s official X account.
The official English website of the new Gundam anime describes the story:
“Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space.
When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle.
Under the entry name “Machu,” she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji.
Now their world is about to enter a new era.”
Voice actors who will be portraying the main cast include Tomoyo Kurosawa (Skip and Loafer) as Amate Yuzuriha (Machu), Yui Ishikawa (Attack on Titan) as Nyaan, and Shimba Tsuchiya (Bakuten!!) as Shลซji Itล.
Staff have also been revealed with Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL) directing the anime. Yoji Enokido (Revolutionary Girl Utena) will be in charge of the series composition and will also be scriptwriting alongside Hideaki Anno (Evangelion). Moreover, illustrator Take (Pokemon Sun and Moon) is the character designer for the series, and Ikuto Yamashita (Shin Kamen Rider) is the mechanical designer.
It’s been two years since Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury premiered. One of the main highlights of that anime was the female duo being an actual couple. Not to mention, it’s rare to see female leads in the Gundam franchise.
Fortunately, the newly announced anime in the popular mecha series will be following the footsteps of its predecessor and maybe with some more potential yuri romance? Either way, Gundam fans will rejoice in this delightful news.
