Just 15% of Steam users played 2024 games

A staggering 85% of Steam gamers tackled their undoubtedly large backlog, playing games from 2023 and below. Frankly, that isn’t too shocking in the grand scheme of things.

Steam shared the notable percentages (via Eurogamer), giving us a look at averages. As it turns out, more gamers were playing last year’s games or older. Moreover, the Steam Replay gives us more detail than in previous years, allowing us to look at our favorite genres, unlocked achievements, longest gaming streak, and games played.

Quite frankly, while yes, plenty of banger games came out this year, we can totally see why more gamers were invested in chipping away at their backlogs rather than jump in on some of this year’s bigger releases like Silent Hill 2 Remake, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and more. That said, it’s wild that such a huge percentage weren’t big on new releases this year.

Starting as a contributor for PSX Extreme, he's worked his way up to its Managing Editor. Using what's he learned over the years, he founded Smash Jump to remind everyone to smash jump.
