What people think about the Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 has just been released. The night before release, I visited a late-night shopping line at Curry’s on Oxford Street, London, UK, where some Nintendo fans were dressed up and ready to be among the first to receive Nintendo’s powerful new system. The day of release, I’ve searched sites high and low for stock, and have had no luck. My Nintendo Switch 2 will have to wait. Despite the fact that most places seem to be sold out, the fate of the Switch 2 is still a mystery. We don’t know if the console will be a success or not. Releases, even for consoles that become failures, usually involve stocks getting sold out, and even for failed consoles, they begin as being popular, for a time at least.

Midnight launch – Will the console be sold out?

It was a warm, humid night, on June 4, 2025, in London. The lead-up to the Switch 2’s launch had not been completely devoid of hype, although you’d have to find the right circles of people, like many Discord communities to find fans who were excited. The general public wasn’t as aware as they were to the PlayStation 5, or even Xbox Series S|X release. Nintendo’s reputation as a company that produces kids’ games is as much a generalization as it ever was. However, ironically, it is kids who are most excited for the new system.

I took a train ride and then a walk to central London to judge how people were feeling about the release of the new system. I took a wrong turn out of Tottenham Court Road Station. Every shopping district looks similar in the dark in London. I realized my error and after 10 minutes of walking down Oxford Street, I saw a line or group of people wearing reds, blues, yellows, and pinks. I immediately thought these look like Super Mario cosplayers. It turned out I was correct. There were around 30 people waiting outside Curry’s (a UK tech and computing store). It was about 10:30 and there was also a cameraman taking pictures of the cosplayers. He may have worked for Nintendo, or maybe a media organization, I really don’t know for sure. I began speaking to the shoppers about Nintendo.

Curse of the second console

The first thing that came up when talking to the shoppers was whether Nintendo would adequately stock the Switch 2, or whether demand would exceed stock and people would find it hard to get the new console. This happened when the PS5 launched. However, Sony had the COVID-19 epidemic as an excuse for low stock. The general opinion among shoppers was that Nintendo would match demand, and that it might not even sell out everywhere. However, the day after release I’ve been looking online, and the system is indeed sold out everywhere.

The next thing that came up was a discussion on a negative and repeated trend that has followed Nintendo systems. Often, after a successful system is released, the follow-up system would fail, or at least not do as well as its predecessor. It happened with the Wii to Wii U, the DS to 3DS, and even the SNES to N64, to a certain extent. Would the Switch 2 follow this trend? Well, the thinking is that as the Switch is an upgrade to the Switch rather than a revolution, and the branding is accurate, so there’s no confusion with what the Switch 2 is, the Switch 2 won’t befall the curse of the second system. The reality remains to be seen.

Bigger and better

The Switch 2 keeps the same form factor as the original Switch. However, the console has improved Joy Cons, is more powerful, and has a better screen, among other improvements. This new console is not just a “pro” Switch; it is an entirely new platform with its own digital architecture and exclusive games. Being a completely new system, but having a similar physical design as the original Switch, it could be argued that there is the possibility of confusion as to whether the console is a minor, or major upgrade.

The launch line up for the Switch 2 includes only a few completely new games. However, the flagship title is the new Mario Kart game, and with this title, there may not be need for a diverse launch line up, since the recent Mario Kart games have sold over 20 million copies each. On top of Mario Kart World, there is the upgrades to the two Switch Zelda games, Street Fighter 6, a Bravely Default remake, and a few other interesting games. Overall it is not a bad launch line up.

Hype and records

The Switch has sold over 140 million units. That is more than the Game Boy and PS1. While the Switch has had a long life, its popularity can’t be underestimated. At the midnight launch I was speaking to someone who was emphasizing how the Switch is a console for everyone, you see people on the train playing it often. It is not just a console for kids, but for everyone. I’m sure Nintendo will hope to keep this reputation going with the Switch 2. It looks like they are aiming to a succession similarly to the NES to Super NES.

The Switch 2 will be home to some great games, there is no doubt about that. In the current generation, successions are more gradual, and games release on both the previous and new console. It seems like things will be similar with the Switch 2. For a while new titles will be available for both systems. We already know that this is what is happening for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends Z-A. The question that remains is how the Switch 2 will be seen in comparison to other systems. Only time will tell.
