The presence of physical media has been diminishing across multiple gaming platforms. Despite Grand Theft Auto VI being released digital only, its pre-order sales skyrocketed on the top charts for both PlayStation and Microsoft stores. This performance resulted in PlayStation coming out to announce the upcoming closures for PlayStation physical discs production and PlayStation stores for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
Sony issued these announcements simultaneously, starting with its halted production for physical discs. PlayStation plans to discontinue its development for physical games after January 2028, limiting performance for PlayStation games to just digital sales. The company has recognized the diminishing interest in physical games, with overall physical sales dropping below 20% from its previous financial reports. This decision will limit general fans to acquiring upcoming PlayStation games through the PlayStation Store and certain retailers in digital formats.
The next sudden announcement involves the closure of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Due to the store’s development in the modern PlayStation platform, the PS3 and PS Vita are incapable of maintaining their availability. Sony instead wants to prioritize support for its modern hardware, making the company close the digital games for older hardware by 2027.
| Countries | Closure Date |
| Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua | August 2026 for PlayStation Store on PS3 |
| Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries | Late 2026 for PlayStation Store on PS3 |
| Global regions | July 2027 for PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita |
These sudden announcements have caused a huge outburst on social media, considering these changes will affect Sony’s new direction in gaming. For now, any game planned to release before January 2028 can still launch physically and digitally on the platform, making PlayStation 5 the last PlayStation hardware to receive physical media. Sony may reveal what else is planned for its current platform in the near future.
