Don’t expect a Tears of the Kingdom follow-up

Producer Eiji Aonuma has gone on record saying that a direct follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is “unlikely.” Also noting that the Japanese giant has no plans on TotK DLC, we can just assume this will be the end of it.

During an interview with Game Informer, Aonuma expresses that he feels that making a sequel to a sequel gets a bit wild and that he doesn’t expect a direct sequel to the title will happen. Obviously, there will be more entries to the franchise itself as — let’s face it — outside of Mario, the Zelda series is Nintendo’s golden child, and considering that the company is aware of how much people love the series and theorizing about it, we wouldn’t expect it to stop developing new games any time soon.

The producer also noted that Tears of the Kingdom “exhausted all of the possibilities in this particular world,” which, considering many of these ideas were meant to be in Breath of the Wild, isn’t that hard to believe. Whatever the case, we’re sure whatever Aonuma has in store for the green-clad hero will be a sight to behold.

“Well that would be a sequel to a sequel, which is getting a little bit wild when you think about it! But as I’ve mentioned previously, with Tears of the Kingdom, we were seeking to build on top of the world we created with Breath of the Wild and really exhaust the possibilities of what we could put into that world. I think it is โ€“ to use a bit of a term โ€“ an apotheosis, or the final form of that version of The Legend of Zelda. In that regard, I don’t think that we’ll be making a direct sequel to a world such as that that we’ve created.”
